Centralia: a tour of a town on fire

Writer's picture: Johnny GriffinJohnny Griffin

There is a town in Pennsylvania that has been on fire since 1962...like, literally. It's called Centralia. And it is an incredibly bizarre tale of incompetence, sinkholes, claims of government eminent domain and yes....graffiti.

By "on fire", I mean this place used to be a coal mining town. And by the earlier reference of incompetence, this town once set their landfill on fire to "get rid of the refuse". Setting off an underground fire that's been burning ever since. A fire that's claimed lives from "molten-fire sinkholes" to underground gas tanks of gas stations reaching combustible temperatures and incinerating those in the way.

So, of course I had to check it out. I was only a couple of hours away on a work project. The now-ghost-town's claim to fame is that of it's "Graffiti Highway". This is a video of that experience.
